When a tree has to come down

Some trees reach the end of the road — storm damage, disease, structural failure, or simply outgrowing the section they were planted in decades ago. Others are healthy trees in the wrong spot: blocking light, lifting driveways, dropping limbs over roofs or getting too friendly with power lines. Whatever the reason, taking a mature tree down is skilled, high-consequence work, and it pays to get a proper climbing arborist rather than a mate with a chainsaw and optimism.

JJ’s Tree Services specialises in controlled removals. Where there’s room, trees can be felled in one piece; but most urban and lifestyle-block jobs in Christchurch and Rangiora don’t offer that luxury. That’s where sectional dismantling comes in — the climber works down from the top, rigging each section on ropes and lowering it precisely to the ground crew. It’s slower, but it means zero damage to fences, gardens, roofs and driveways, even in the tightest sections.

Removal or prune?

Plenty of “removals” turn out to be pruning jobs once an arborist looks properly. A heavy crown reduction, dead-wood removal or a careful reshape can save a tree that looks past it — and save you money. JJ will tell you straight which one your tree actually needs; if it can stay safely, we’ll say so.
