Good pruning is part science, part craft. Done well, it opens up light, reduces wind loading, removes hazards and gives a tree decades more healthy life. Done badly — topped, hacked or stripped at the wrong time of year — it weakens the tree and creates expensive problems down the track. Most residential pruning falls into a few familiar jobs. Crown thinning lets light and air back into the garden without changing the tree’s shape. Crown lifting raises the canopy over lawns, driveways and roofs. Dead-wooding removes the brittle, lifeless limbs that become missiles in a nor’wester. And clearance pruning keeps branches off houses, sheds, fences and service lines. If your place feels dark by mid-afternoon or you’re dodging branches on the mower, pruning is usually the answer.
