Firewood cutting

Your old tree is next winter’s warm lounge — cut, stacked, sorted.

Neatly stacked cut firewood rounds ready for winter burning

From standing tree to stacked winter heat

Canterbury winters are no joke, and a woodshed full of dry firewood is worth its weight in gold come July. Here’s the good news: that macrocarpa, gum or pine coming down in your backyard is premium heating fuel once it’s cut and seasoned. Instead of paying to have good timber carted away — then paying again for firewood in autumn — JJ’s Tree Services converts removals into burnable lengths on the spot.

We cut trunks and limbs to fireplace-friendly lengths and stack the rounds neatly where you want them, ready for splitting and seasoning. Gum, macrocarpa, oak and other dense species from Canterbury sections burn long and hot; even pine and poplar make excellent shoulder-season and kindling wood. We’ll tell you honestly what you’ve got and how long it needs to dry — usually a full summer stacked in a breezy spot for best results.

What’s included

  • Assessment of your timber’s firewood value with every removal quote
  • Cutting to lengths that suit your firebox or burner
  • Neat stacking where you want it — woodshed, fence line or paddock
  • Advice on seasoning times for each species
  • Option to chip the small stuff and stack only the good wood
  • Site left clean — sawdust raked, offcuts cleared

Plan ahead for winter

Fresh-cut wood doesn’t burn well, so timing matters: trees felled in late winter and spring, cut and stacked over summer, make superb fuel the following winter. If you’re thinking about a removal, doing it now means free heat later. And if you already have a pile of rounds waiting, ask about cutting them down to size — that’s bread-and-butter work for us.
