What to expect from a free tree quote

Arborist rigging a heavy limb over a brick house while ground crew assist with ropes

“Free quotes” gets thrown around a lot in the trades. Here’s what it actually means when you call JJ’s Tree Services — and the questions worth asking any arborist who looks at your trees.

The walk-around

We start by looking, not cutting. Species, structure, health, lean, targets underneath (sheds, fences, the neighbour’s prized roses) — all of it shapes the plan. Expect us to ask what’s bothering you: the shade, the mess, the worry in high winds? Your answer matters as much as the tree.

Options, not ultimatums

A good arborist gives you choices: prune versus remove, stage the work over two visits, or sometimes do nothing and monitor. If a tree can stay safely with a prune, we’ll say so — even though a removal would pay better. That honesty is the whole point of an independent local crew.

What the price covers

Our quotes spell out the work, the clean-up (always included), and what happens to the wood — chipped, taken away, or cut as firewood. No mystery extras on the day.

Questions to ask any arborist

  • Will you climb with ropes or spikes? (Spikes wound living trees.)
  • Is the tidy-up included?
  • What’s the timing — and does the species care?
  • Can I keep the wood as firewood?
